1. Few from IITs, BITS, NITs, etc getting Top packages in companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, Schlumberger, etc ending up outside India.
A few lads from the top colleges end up getting placed with packages upto 10-20 lpa in various companies including banks.
2. Some prefer doing an MBA as they want a higher pay check and a quicker climb up the ladder.
3. Some you find going to foreign Universities, America to pursue MS since US is the home of major Fortune 500 companies.
4. Some give GATE and end up doing M.Tech in IITs, Few of them end up getting selected to IIMs,
In this category among IIMs some of them get placed with great packages, while some of them become entrepreneur as of their dream.
Similarly for M.Tech ones some of them pursue PhD and follow teaching line, while some manage to get good jobs.
5. Few of them are interested to get good government jobs. So some manage these jobs through GATE, and similar exams conducted by BARC, DRDO, BSNL, CSRI, ISRO etc.
6. Those who didn't manage to get good jobs and don't have any family pressure take admissions in colleges for MBA, M.tech and other courses. So few of them (M.Tech ones) you will see teaching in colleges after their M.tech. .
7. Majority of the students from colleges throughout India join Accenture, Infosys, TCS, Cognizant etc.
8. Guys from streams like Mechanical, Civil end up working as Site Engineers, Design Engineers, maintainence Engineers, Quality Control.
9. Some of them know from their birth that they have to join family business, so they look engineering as a "degree" one can have after 12th.
10. A few of them by fourth year of engineering manage to know what they really want to do in life. So they switch to their artistic talents and pursue their passion, that may include acting,directing (Varun Aggarwal a good example), singing, Guitarist. Some along with their side jobs do stage performances along with their college band.
11. Few struggle by working for small companies and then jump into one of the above 10 points.
12. And finally, there is a lot that realizes they weren't suited for this field. They struggle, they slog, they go into inner realizations, a spiritual journey of life, they search their gut, their true calling, and then they do any of the above 11 points.
13. A handful of people start their own ventures, be it the manufacturing or tech startup.
14. Some go for Civil Services examinations like IAS and IES to serve the nation
15. Some of them join Army, Airforce, Navy. Some join merchant navy.
16. Those who are not interested in studying further, go for small technical courses which can lend them a job.
17. Some of the focused students manage to get the jobs in the field of their interest may it be Electronics, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical etc
18. Few of them earn through their blogs/websites, which they might have made in their 3rd or 4th year.
19. According to a new scenario, some of the ambitious people join startups instead of joining MNCs as to experience the initial stage of a company and to work in their favourite technical field along with flexible timings, and work environment.
20. Some of them run after their college to "complete" their degree. This according to the person depends from few months to few years.
21. Some of them work as project/research associate in IITs after B.Tech.
22. This out of curiosity would like to know what the rest of the people do who drop a year for GATE, IES, etc to show off that they are busy. May be they are the ones flooding up call centers for initial months of their career.
23. Some of them end up marrying because of their village background and other reasons.
So this is a typical scenario of engineers in India.
